THE BUILDING

Contemporary design is taking over at Place du Canada, built in the international style on the wave of excitement generated by Expo 67. Fifty years later, in 2017, the sun-filled lobby – 20-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, 6,000 square feet of space – underwent a dramatic renovation defined by modern lines and a digital art installation by Montreal-based blu[e]space. Over 66,000 pixels produce the shimmering light patterns of this 3,000-square-foot wall.

Place du Canada’s interactive art installation was designed by artist Cheryl Catterall to share stories about Montreal. It expresses the city’s landscapes and landmarks through constantly changing colours and shapes, always responding to the volume of people in the space and their movements. The plan is to invite other artists to use the light wall to create new stories about living and working in Montreal.

The lobby connects directly to a landscaped terrace on its west side, and from its main entrance to a walkway that leads north to two parks, Place du Canada and Dorchester Square. Recently restored, these expansive parks offer a quiet refuge from the surrounding urban density.

A sleek staircase takes you from the lobby one storey down to the Promenade, and from there to the metro system and 32 kilometres of underground food courts, shopping and services. Tenants of these 22 storeys have quick access to commuter trains, buses and major roadways. The building’s common areas and washrooms are also being renovated floor by floor.
